Collected Along the Way: How Travel Inspires Bearberry & Mellow

From the intricate patterns of Marrakech to the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds and the sun-washed colours of southern Spain, travel has always been one of the greatest sources of inspiration behind Bearberry & Mellow.

I have always been drawn to homes that feel as though they have evolved over time.

Not rooms where everything belongs to the same collection, or where every colour has been perfectly coordinated, but homes filled with layers, an old chair beside a newer sofa, patterned cushions, books collected on travels, an interesting lampshade, ceramics picked up along the way and fabrics that somehow work together without being an exact match.

It is this idea of a collected home that sits at the heart of Bearberry & Mellow.

And so much of that inspiration comes from travelling.

The Patterns of Marrakech

Marrakech is almost impossible to experience without noticing pattern.

It is everywhere. I spent 3 weeks in the old Medina and I fell in love with the city.

Across tiled floors and courtyard walls, woven into textiles, painted onto ceramics and layered throughout the beautiful riads hidden behind the walls of the Medina.

Moroccan zellige is particularly captivating because of the way hundreds of small pieces come together to form one larger pattern. There is repetition, but also variation, the wonderful character that comes from something being made by hand.

That balance between order and imperfection is something I love.

In a home, pattern can work in much the same way.

A floral cushion beside a stripe. A patterned lampshade against a painted wall. A printed tablecloth underneath simple china. A detailed fabric sitting against an old timber chair.

You don't necessarily notice every individual element first. You notice how the room feels.

Warm. Interesting. Layered. Personal.

Marrakech reinforced for me that we shouldn't always be frightened of putting pattern beside pattern. When the colours speak to one another, different designs can create depth rather than clutter.

The Cotswolds

Then there is the Cotswolds, perhaps the place that has influenced the visual world of Bearberry & Mellow more than anywhere else.

The inspiration here is quieter.

Weathered stone, deep garden greens, old timber, climbing roses, antique furniture, faded textiles, overflowing flower borders and country houses where rooms feel as though they have been added to and changed by generations of people.

English country interiors have an ease about them that I love.

Nothing feels too precious.

There might be a beautiful antique beside a pile of books. A grand room softened by a comfortable sofa covered in cushions. Patterned curtains next to floral upholstery. A slightly crooked painting hanging above it all.

It is considered, but it doesn't always look considered.

That distinction is important to me.

I want Bearberry & Mellow cushions and homewares to help create homes with that same feeling — spaces that are beautiful, but also comfortable enough to actually live in.

Our love of heritage greens, warm creams, floral patterns, block prints and garden-inspired designs comes back again and again to the English countryside and the Cotswolds.

Ronda and the Craftsmanship of Andalusia

Travelling through southern Spain introduces an entirely different kind of beauty.

Ronda, with gardens perched dramatically above the Andalusian landscape, is filled with whitewashed buildings, old stone, ironwork, tiles and the warm, earthy colours that seem so at home beneath the Spanish sun.

Throughout this part of Spain there is also an extraordinary tradition of craftsmanship.

It reminds me that beautiful objects are often about more than simply the finished design. They are about the hands that made them, the knowledge behind them and techniques that have been passed from one generation to another.

That connection to craftsmanship is something I find endlessly inspiring.

It is also one of the reasons I am so drawn to hand block printing.

There is a softness and character to a hand-printed pattern that a perfectly uniform surface simply cannot replicate. Tiny variations become part of its beauty.

Whether it is leatherwork in Andalusia, tiles in Marrakech or hand block printed textiles, there is something very special about objects that still show evidence of the person who made them.

A Hacienda Outside Seville

One of the things that stays with me most from travelling is often not a famous landmark at all.

It might be a room.

A courtyard.

A particular combination of colours.

Or the way someone has put a house together.

At a hacienda on the outskirts of Seville, it was the layers that caught my attention.

Patterned tiles against old walls. Beautiful fabrics beside rustic furniture. Dark timber, greenery, ceramics and unexpected combinations of colour.

Nothing needed to match perfectly.

In fact, it was better because it didn't.

There is a confidence in those interiors, an understanding that a home can hold different patterns, periods and influences and still feel completely cohesive.

It is something I think about often when styling Bearberry & Mellow.

A Cushion, a Sofa, a Lampshade

You don't need to redesign an entire room to change the way it feels.

Sometimes it begins with something very small.

A table covered in block print linen.

An armchair upholstered in an unexpected fabric.

The key is finding a thread that ties everything together.

For Bearberry & Mellow, that thread is often colour.

Deep greens appear again and again. Cream softens them. Florals bring the garden indoors. Natural materials add warmth. Pattern gives the room personality.

From there, you can layer.

Mix your floral cushions with an old sofa. Put a patterned lampshade beside an antique table. Use beautiful table linen for an ordinary Sunday lunch rather than saving it for a special occasion.

Add the books, photographs, flowers, paintings and slightly strange little treasures you have collected over the years.

Bearberry & Mellow will always have its roots firmly in English country living and the Cotswolds, but travel continually adds new layers to that world.

Marrakech reminds me to be braver with pattern.

The Cotswolds remind me of the beauty of restraint, age and rooms that feel collected over generations.

Andalusia reminds me of colour, craftsmanship and the importance of objects made with care.

And together, those influences become something new.

Because ultimately, I think the best interiors are a little like travelling itself.
